Spur of the Moment

Since Brett didn't have class last Saturday, and since we had a special Stake Conference on Sunday (so Brett didn't have to teach), we decided to jump in the car and take a trip up to the north shore of Lake Superior, by Duluth. We grabbed some munchies and a couple of DS's and headed out early Saturday morning. Our boys do really well in the car (we don't usually have to stop that often), so our first stop was in Duluth.

Lake Superior (the world's largest lake) is visible in the background. We then headed past Duluth, up on the north shore, and stopped at Gooseberry Falls. Ian fell asleep minutes before we got there, so he ended up sleeping through most of the action.

Many people commented on how awesome it was that we had the wagon for him, and one couple even made an offer to rent some space in it for their sleeping child. While Ian slept, Brett and Colin headed over to the falls to play.

And then after Brett and Colin had returned an hour later from playing at some other falls nearby, Ian finally woke up. Ian was really excited to be near a waterfall like on the movie Up, which we saw the other day at the drive-in. (Can you tell Ian just woke up?)

Our next stop was a little farther up the north shore at Split Rock Lighthouse. This is a lighthouse built in the early 20th century after a huge storm claimed dozens of ships on Lake Superior. Because of iron deposits in the ground near the shore (which messed up the ships' compass readings), it was necessary to have a lighthouse at night or during storms or when smoke from forest fires cut visibility on the lake.

As part of the tour, we got to go up into the top of the lighthouse. There were plenty of Pete's Dragon references made at this point. The kids were a bit scared to go up the stairs, and it wasn't very easy for me, being pregnant, to get up and down. It took us a while, but we eventually made it all the way up and down safely.

After the lighthouse, we headed to our hotel to do some swimming. Here are Colin and Ian going down the kiddie water slide together.

Brett even taught Colin how to do a cannonball. It took several tries for Colin to stop landing on his face. He always kept a tight cannonball, though.

After swimming, we headed back to our room to prepare for the next day's adventures.
